3 Key Topics

Throughout the course, three major topics helped shape how I think about cultural competence in the classroom:

1. Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP):
Every child grows at their own pace. DAP helps us meet them where they are culturally and developmentally. For example, using stories and activities that reflect their family life and language.

2. Anti-Bias Education:
Young children notice differences. Anti-bias education teaches them to recognize unfairness and stand up for justice, even in simple ways like choosing inclusive books and setting group norms.

3. Supporting Emergent Bilinguals:
We must celebrate and support students who speak more than one language. That includes labeling classroom items in different languages, inviting families to share cultural stories, and translating communication home.
